SEATTLE -- Getting Wade Miley back from the disabled list might not be the ticket to the Seattle Mariners getting back into the pennant race, but its a step in the right direction for a rotation thats had a rough June. The veteran left-hander is scheduled to be back on the mound when the Mariners host Pittsburgh on Wednesday night, the final game of a two-game series with the Pirates (37-41).Miley (6-3) was eligible to come off the disabled list Tuesday night and is listed as the Mariners probable starter for Wednesdays game. Shoulder soreness landed him on the DL, costing the Mariners one of their veteran starters during a month when three of them -- Miley, Felix Hernandez and Taijuan Walker -- missed starts because of injury.Miley and Walker are expected back in the rotation this week, while Hernandez threw 15 pitches off a mound Tuesday and looks on track to be back in the rotation by early- to mid-July. Getting all the arms back, combined with the successful start of newcomer Wade LeBlanc last week, left the Mariners (39-38) with a tough decision to make -- and manager Scott Servais did just that when he announced veteran starter Nathan Karns would work out of the bullpen. Our club certainly welcomes the arm down there, Servais told reporters before Tuesdays game. But more importantly, get him a breather, get him back on track.Pittsburghs rotation has had its share of issues as well this season, and the Pirates are hoping that touted prospect Jameson Taillon can help provide some stability. The 24-year-old right-hander is scheduled to make his fifth career start Wednesday night, having struggled his last two times out. With veterans Gerrit Cole and Ryan Vogelsong ailing, and the rest of the rotation falling on hard times, the Pirates look to Taillon and fellow rookie Chad Kuhl to make an immediate impact. Kuhls next start -- his MLB debut came over the weekend -- is scheduled to come Saturday at Oakland. The Pirates could use a shot of youth in a rotation that has been struggling as of late. Jonathon Niese was the latest starter to have an off night as he allowed nine hits and five runs (four earned) over 4 2/3 innings in Tuesday nights 5-2 loss at Seattle. In the fifth inning, Niese said, it just unraveled. That phrase also applies to both teams seasons because in large part to starting pitching. Neither rotation is hitting on all cylinders right now.The Mariners are hoping that some healthy arms might get them back on track. Getting Hernandez back on the mound is of particular importance, so his brief bullpen session was a step toward resolving that issue. His arm looks great, Servais said. Obviously, its fresh. ASHBURN, Va. -- Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins said his latest postgame catchphrase -- the how do you like me now? shout directed at general manager Scot McCloughan -- didnt carry any hidden message. As Cousins ran off the field following Sundays win over the Green Bay Packers, he stopped and shouted the line at McCloughan, then tussled the GMs hair as he kept running into the tunnel.Cousins, of course, is playing under the franchise tag, and his contract situation has been well-documented. Cousins wanted $20 million per season; the Redskins best offer was $16 million. That has led to much speculation on his future with the Redskins and whether they will meet his asking price for a long-term deal.Cousins said it was just an in-the-moment situation. No, theres nothing, Cousins said. I was just excited coming off the field with emotion. I would prefer for that to happen with no cameras and no microphones. But I ran into him on the field where there were cameras and microphones. Were both competitors who want to win desperately and both feeling great in that moment.Scot has done a phenomenal job bringing in the right people ... that have made a big difference in the success of this team. A big reason we are where we are and part of the reason we enjoy being here is because of the team Scot assembled.Cousins said during his weekly appearance on 106.7 The Fan that it was McCloughan who kept encouraging him after a rough start to the 2015 season. Cousinns then finished strong with 19 touchdowns and two interceptions in his last eight games.ddddddddddddScot gets it; hes a football guy, Cousins said. He understands what its like to play at this level and the challenges and demands and pressure that come with it.Still, the challenge for Cousins remains to convince the organization that hes worth an expensive long-term contract. He said hes able to focus on the games and not his future because this episode is just an extension of his entire career.Cousins entered his senior season in high school without a scholarship offer. As a senior at Michigan State, he said he played not knowing what would happen in the draft because he wasnt a projected high pick. Then he was drafted in the fourth round to be a backup to Robert Griffin III.And here we are again, Cousins said. This isnt the first time I went through this, so you just play.Cousins has thrown 17 touchdowns to seven interceptions this season as the Redskins have gone 6-1-1 heading into Thursdays game at Dallas after an 0-2 start.Numerous analysts have said the Redskins need to keep him long term. Cousins, however, said hes ignoring that, too.Its a positive thing they would say that, but at the same time, I know people are itching to say the opposite if I dont play well Thursday, Cousins said. Im always focused on the here and now. ' ' '
