TORONTO -- The team that was built to beat Canada didnt beat anyone. And really, this ending was just about perfect. If youre going to go down in flames, go all the way.Team USA most certainly did, ending its disappointing World Cup appearance with a 4-3 loss to the Czech Republic on Thursday. The American players were booed off the ice by the at the Air Canada Centre crowd at the conclusion of the game.Team USA pushed back in a meaningless game after trailing by two goals through two periods of play, to at least avoid a meltdown reminiscent of the 5-0 loss in the bronze-medal game in Sochi during the 2014 Olympics, but its very small consolation in a disastrous tournament. They were given a spot in the easiest World Cup group, with Team Europe and Czech Republic the consensus No. 7 and No. 8 teams in this tournament. Team USA managed just three goals against those two teams.During the second period against the Czechs, Team USA defenseman Ryan Suter scored an own-goal, one that gave the Czech Republic its second goal of the game and it was a moment that pretty much captured the whole tournament for the Americans. So many of their problems in this tournament were self-inflicted -- from questionable roster decisions to forgetting to show up on time against Team Europe in the opener, an underwhelming performance in which they never recovered.Justin Abdelkader, whose inclusion on the first draft of the Team USA roster became a point of debate for those who disagreed with GM Dean Lombardis plan, got a small bit of redemption with his first goal of the tournament, converting on a great feed from Dustin Byfuglien, but it was a rare highlight in this tournament for the Americans.Team USA finishes 0-3 with a goal-differential of minus-6, which pushed Finland at the bottom of the standings. For a team that entered this World Cup with aspirations of winning it all, its as disappointing a final tally as could have been imagined.Three stars:1. Milan Michalek, F, Team Czech Republic: Sure, one of his goals came when Suter inadvertently knocked the puck past Team USA goalie Ben Bishop, but he finished with two goals for a team that struggles to score. Thats worthy of top billing. The Michalek family can leave this tournament with pride, with Milan and Zbynek combining for three goals in the game.2. Petr Mrazek, G, Czech Republic: He allowed three goals but came up big when needed most in the third period. He absolutely robbed Patrick Kane with a sprawling save in the third period while the Czech Republic was clinging on to a one-goal lead. He made another one on Abdelkader with just over two minutes left. He finished with 36 saves.3. Ryan McDonagh, D, Team USA: His shorthanded goal gave the game new life and actually showed his team wasnt willing to roll over without some fight in the third period. There were a lot of problems with Team USA in this tournament, but McDonagh wasnt one of them. He ended up with the team lead in goals, with two. Gar Heard Jersey . Brad Jacobs and his Sault Ste. MIAMI -- Three days after Jose Fernandezs death, the Miami Marlins keep finding new sources for fresh tears. One such example was provided by catching coach Brian Schneider, whose 6-year-old son adored the late Marlins ace and followed him around the ballpark like a puppy. After Fernandez died in a boating accident over the weekend, Holden Schneider attended kindergarten Monday and wrote a story about his favorite major leaguer. When his dad circulated the image among the players in the Miami clubhouse, eyes welled on cue.My kids just gravitate to Jose, Schneider said. After batting practice on Saturday, I didnt see Holden for a half-hour or 45 minutes. He was out there on the field with Jose. Heres this little boy who doesnt know any different, and everybody knew how much he looked up to Jose.Guys told me they were doing good, and then they read that, and they started to tear up. And when I read it, I teared up too. This is how life unfolds as the Marlins play out the season under the most trying of circumstances. They hold daily meetings to discuss changes in the schedule and ways to honor their late teammate amid suppressed appetites and restless nights of sleep. Meanwhile, the games go on as usual.Monday night, Dee Gordon launched an improbable home run into the upper deck and the Marlins rode a wave of adrenaline to a 7-3 victory over the New York Mets. On Tuesday, the wave subsided in the face of?Noah Syndergaards pitching, and the Marlins lost 12-1 to the Mets.On Wednesday, a public memorial for Fernandez will begin outside Marlins Park at 2 p.m. ET, and a funeral motorcade will leave from the park at 2:16 (in honor of Fernandezs uniform number). Fans will have an opportunity to pay their respects throughout the evening during a public viewing at St. Brendans Catholic Church in Miami. On Thursday, an open date in the schedule, Marlins players, coaches and front-office personnel will attend a private mass with Fernandezs family. The Marlins will then fly to Washington for a season-ending series against the Nationalss.ddddddddddddThe atmosphere at Marlins Park on Tuesday couldnt possibly have matched what took place in the series opener when Fernandezs teammates honored his memory with one touching gesture after another, and Gordons early homer sent a surge through the air. The Miami hitters were overwhelmed Tuesday by Syndergaard, and Marlins starter Tom Koehler lasted a mere 3 2/3 innings while falling behind 4-1. The New York lineup piled on late against the Marlins bullpen.I think everybodys doing the best they can, Koehler said. Were not trained to handle anything like this. As professional athletes, we kind of get desensitized to a lot of things. Were able to go out and play regardless of the situation. But its usually individual situations. One guy might be dealing with something on a normal night and the other 24 arent. This hit everybody. So everybody deals with it in different ways.As manager Don Mattingly has routinely pointed out, the Marlins have no road map or historical precedent to navigate the nightmare theyve encountered. The team has made grief counselors available for the players, but talking, venting and crying can only achieve so much. The Marlins left the ballpark late Tuesday knowing they would be eliminated from postseason contention with a San Francisco Giants victory. At 78-79, Miami can post its first winning record since 2009 with wins in three of its next four games. But its a challenge for Mattingly or anyone else in a Miami uniform to find perspective amid the heartache.Obviously, we see so much on television and what people are saying nationally, Mattingly said. Its hard to get a feel when youre in the middle of it. You dont get to see where the waves and the ripples are going. We know whats coming the next few days, but I dont know if we know the full impact of it. As time gets away from us, Im sure guys will look into it more, read more and see how far those ripples go.
