The injury bothered Bledsoe in the Suns victory over the Clippers on Monday and he sat out the teams home loss to Memphis on Thursday night.WWE is often at its best when the pressure is on and the creative team is forced to scramble following an unforeseen turn of events. Its difficult to tell whether that was the case at the end of Sundays SummerSlam main event, when Brock Lesnar busted open Randy Ortons head with a short elbow, setting off a chain of events that appeared to blur the lines between a work and a shoot. But it was certainly the case with the shoulder injury suffered by Finn Balor during his victory over Seth Rollins on Sunday for the inaugural WWE Universal championship. With news breaking hours before Mondays episode of Raw that Balor would relinquish the belt, the show had a fresh feel, as if the creative decisions were being made in real time. With Balor now expected to miss up to six months, they probably were. What it created was an episode less reliant on dialogue and gimmicks and more focused on the in-ring product, centered around four matches that retained a pay-per-view feel from the night before because of what was at stake.By holding a quasi-tournament on Monday to decide who will face off next week in a Fatal 4-Way match for the vacant title, the WWE did well to take Balors real-life injury and turn it into a positive. The result was a must-see episode on Monday, with the cliffhanger tease producing the same effect for next week. The bigger question, however, centers on which direction the company will now go with its new title, after victories on Monday from Seth Rollins, Kevin Owens, Big Cass and Roman Reigns set up next weeks title match.Putting the belt around Balors waist after one of the hottest debut months on the main roster in recent history cemented WWEs commitment to its new era of superstars. It also broke the mold of the predictable booking cycle the company had been stuck in at its highest level, proving to cynical fans that anything was possible following the draft and brand extension. But with Balor now injured, will WWE simply fall back into its old pattern, putting the belt back around the waist of an old reliable? It sure felt that way watching Reigns victory over Chris Jericho on Monday, with the painfully foreseeable elements of Reigns overcoming all odds (and kicking out of finishing moves) nearly overshadowing what was a strong match.SPEAR BY REIGNS!! @WWERomanReigns moves on to the #Fatal4Way next week for the #UniversalTitle on #RAW! pic.twitter.com/qkQUeUWlf0- WWE (@WWE) August 23, 2016If Reigns goes over again next week, one can only expect fans would riot. If Rollins wins, it would be a return to business as usual. Meanwhile, a victory for Big Cass would be too big of a shock to even consider it a possibility. That just leaves Owens, who is not only incredibly popular, hes performing at a high level as arguably the top pure heel in the company. Hes also the perfect balance between where the WWE was in 2015 and where it appears to be headed.Sometimes unforeseen circumstances bring out the best of what WWE has to offer creatively. Giving Owens an opportunity to shine at the highest level earlier than expected might just be his ticket to superstardom. It also might prove to become a better decision for the company than giving the belt to Balor in the first place.Which direction will WWE go? The fact that it has left us so eager to find out proves that Mondays episode of Raw was a success, in spite of some last-minute bad luck leading up to it.Hits and missesThe in-ring quality of the four matches that determined next weeks Fatal 4-Way participants was strong, and none was better than the Rollins-Sami Zayn match that opened the show. This was old-school storytelling at its finest, with Zayn executing a number of high spots while selling an ankle injury that Rollins targeted throughout.ddddddddddddTitus ONeils microphone work while delivering insults about former teammate Darren Young produced a series of negative reactions on social media. But theres something encouraging about the direction hes heading, with his recent heel turn the best use of his character in a long time. His brief skirmish with Bob Backlund on Monday was entertaining, and his feud with Young, despite its noticeable absence from SummerSlam, has shown an encouraging amount of attention to detail.Rusevs count-out loss to Big Cass while selling the rib injury he suffered the night before against Reigns was booked in a way to allow the United States champion a chance to save face in defeat. Or at least that was the intention. Instead, all it did was come across as weak, with Rusev willingly accepting defeat as he turned with Lana and walked up the ramp as the referee counted him out. Considering how power hungry and maniacal Rusevs character has been written to be, a no mas moment with the companys highest-profile title at stake made little sense.Ric Flair has said it himself that WWE womens champion Charlotte is 10 times the athlete he ever was. But the daughter of the dirtiest player in the game has certainly acquired her fathers skill of cutting a mean and effective heel promo. For anyone, myself included, who was a bit slow to accept the idea of Charlotte as a legitimate first-round pick in WWEs July draft, her promo against Bayley on Monday backs up all of her hype.Speaking of Bayley, consider me high on the list of those who questioned whether her incredibly charming gimmick could get over on the main roster in the same way it owned the tiny NXT arena at Full Sail University in Orlando, Florida. But the massive pop Bayley received from the Brooklyn crowd on her way into the ring to challenge Charlotte -- as well the one she got after her win over Dana Brooke on Monday -- proved that shes already over in a big way.Welcome @ItsBAYLEYWWE, the newest @WWE #RAW Superstar!! pic.twitter.com/6j3ZdtDGkx- WWE (@WWE) August 23, 2016When it comes to creating a pound-for-pound list of my favorite jobbers who have been served up to Braun Strowman of late, consider Johnny Knockout as No. 1 with a bullet. He not only got off more offense than anyone else to date before his eventual demise, his prematch interview was one of the more colorful and bizarre we have seen during Strowmans recent reinvention tour on Raw.Most were confused at the reasoning behind Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson interrupting the retirement speech from the Dudley Boyz to put them through tables. But there was a subtle passing of the torch element at play between heel tag teams who built their reputation on a lack of respect for others. Considering The Clubs intimidating look and aggressive style, booking them any other way than nasty and unforgiving would be a disservice.Move of the nightSeriously, this award could go to Neville every single week. His standing 450 splash from the ring apron onto Owens was almost as absurd as his corkscrew suicide dive moments later. But Neville ended up on the business end of the real move of the night, as Owens picked him up into a torture rack before spinning him into a vicious neckbreaker. The three-count that followed was a mere formality.Line of the nightTheres a reason Bayley got left behind at the revolution. -- Charlotte, at her absolute heel best, in response to Bayleys challenge of fighting for the WWE womens championship.
