The Los Angeles Clippers upgraded their perimeter rotation as part of a three-way deal involving the Phoenix Suns and Milwaukee Bucks. Numbers Game looks at the deal sending J.J. Redick and Jared Dudley to Los Angeles. The Clippers Get: SG J.J. Redick and SF Jared Dudley. Redick, 29, is a three-point sharpshooter who has also turned into a pretty fair perimeter defender. Shooting 39.0% on three-pointers over the course of his career, Redick was shooting at that rate prior to last seasons trade to Milwaukee, but he faded down the stretch, hitting just 31.8% from beyond the arc for the Bucks, and finishing a career-low 36.6%. Even so, Redick finished with a caeer-high 14.1 points and 3.8 assists per game, making a career-best 2.1 three-pointers per game, the fourth straight season that his made threes-per-game has increased. With the Clippers, Redick would appear to be a fine fit, with his deep shooting ability serving as a way to spread the floor for penetrating PG Chris Paul as well as bigs DeAndre Jordan and Blake Griffin. Reports indicate that Redick will sign a four-year, $27-million deal to join the Clippers. Jared Dudley is a 27-year-old small forward who has put together three straight decent seasons for a Suns team that hasnt been very good. In 2012-2013, Dudley averaged 10.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and a career-high 2.6 assists per game, shooting 46.8% from the field, including 39.1% on threes. Over his career, Dudley is shooting 40.5% on three-point attempts, ranking 13th among active players. Dudley has two years, at $4.25-million per, left on his contract, with a player option, at the same price, for a third year. Between Redick and Dudley, the Clippers are adding a pair of wings that have combined for 7-9 three-point attempts per game over the last three seasons. With the three-point shot ever-increasing in importance, the Clippers made a strong move to improve that aspect of their perimeter play. The Suns Get: PG Eric Bledsoe and SF Caron Butler. 23-year-old Eric Bledsoe is coming off a strong season in which he guided one of the leagues best second units and set career-highs with 8.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.4 steals per game, while playing 20:23 per game as Chris Pauls backup. Bledsoe didnt shoot a lot from long range, but his 39.7% from beyond the arc was a vast improvement over his first two years in the league. Since the Suns already have Goran Dragic at the point, there is some expectation that Bledsoe is going to also spend time at shooting guard in order to get him more playing time. Bledsoe will make $2.626-million this season and will be a restricted free agent at seasons end. Butler, 33, has had some good seasons, but is nearing the end of the line. He scored 10.4 points per game, the second-lowest scoring rate of his career while attempting a career-low 9.2 field goals per game, last season. He also had career-lows in rebounds (2.9), assists (1.0), steals (0.7) and minutes (24:06) per game. Heading into the final year of a contract that will pay him $8-million, Butler could play a regular role in the Suns rotation next season, but hes merely a short-term placeholder as the team builds for the future. The Suns get more athletic with Bledsoe in their lineup and he could be a part of their future, but right now hes part of a roster that is at least a few years away from being competitive. The Bucks Get: A second-round pick from both the Clippers and the Suns. While two second-round picks may not amount to much, they are a pair of assets in exchange for a player, Redick, that the Bucks werent going to keep anyway.
