Acquired just hours after the news broke that Daniel Alfredsson had decided to sign with the Red Wings following 17 seasons in Ottawa, Bobby Ryan said hes ready to hit the ground running with his new team north of the border. Speaking with Bryan Hayes and Jeff ONeill on Leafs Lunch on Monday, the newest Senator said replacing the long-time captain wont be easy, but is excited to come to a team and city he thinks is a "nicer fit" than his prior situation in Anaheim. Although he wasnt traded for Alfredsson, Ryan knows he comes to Ottawa with lofty expectations, but says he is ready to assume a leading role, hopefully as the top winger on Jason Spezzas right side. "Theres enough players there. You look at Spez whos probably going to take over that role if thats the decision that is made," Ryan said in reference to who he thought would take on more of a leadership role with Alfredsson moving on. "Hopefully I just get to jump in and play with him and he makes my job as easy as hes made it for other guys in the past." Speaking with Spezza and Ryan Getzlaf after he was dealt, Ryan said he expects to establish an immediate chemistry that will hopefully help him regain the high-level scoring touch he displayed in the four seasons prior to 2012-13. "I think I got lucky and Im coming off playing with one of the other best in the west coast," Ryan said in reference to Getzlaf. "Talked to Spez as well and hes certainly excited. We had a quick conversation with him about trying to get together a few weeks before the season starts just to start to try and figure each other out right away." The 26-year-old who was the Ducks second overall selection in the 2005 NHL Draft is coming off an 11-goal, 30 point season, but had previously posted 30-plus markers in four straight seasons. Ryan said part of the reason for his struggles was the trade speculation that made it seem like each time he stepped onto the ice could be his last in Anaheim. "It changes things," Ryan said. "It makes it tougher to produce, makes it tougher to get your mind around things on the ice sometimes. I think this is going to be a blessing in disguise for me. Hopefully I can come in and be part of something pretty special like they have had going on in Ottawa for a while now." The former OHL standout said he should have no problem adjusting to the climate change that comes from moving from California to north of the 49th, considering the four seasons he spent playing in Owen Sound. "Its going to be something completely different, but Im familiar with it obviously playing in Owen Sound. I understand the weather. I cant wait." Moving to a more hockey-centric environment is something Ryan also sees as a positive, saying he is especially excited to participate against the Senators rivals in Monreal and Toronto. "I guess mayhem is the best word for it," Ryan said. "Im going to get to be part of a couple of pretty cool rivalries there. You got Anaheim and L.A. and Anaheim and San Jose, but I dont think its going to be quite like anything weve ever seen, so Im looking most forward to those games." Cheap Bill Mazeroski Jersey . LOUIS -- The New Orleans Saints looked like a team playing out the string. MADRID, Spain -- Rafael Nadal fought back to beat David Ferrer 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-0 in Fridays quarterfinals of the Madrid Open, maintaining his bid to reach a seventh straight final since returning from a knee injury. In a meeting of Spains top ranked players, Ferrers baseline game on the outdoor red clay almost proved too much for the fifth-seeded Nadal. But Nadal held on to force a third set and won six straight games to improve his career record against Ferrer to 18-4, avoiding an early exit like Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer earlier this week. "(I) have to be very happy for making it to the semifinals, and even more so after how the match has gone," said Nadal, who won in 2005 and 2010. "I could have been very close to thinking about the next tournament right now." Third-seeded Andy Murray never found his stride and lost 7-6 (3), 6-4 to last years runner-up Tomas Berdych. In the womens event, top-ranked Serena Williams struggled past Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-3, 0-6, 7-5, and second-seeded Maria Sharapova joined her in the semifinals after easing by Kaia Kanepi of Estonia 6-2, 6-4. Nadal has won four titles this year since being sidelined for several months with tendinitis in his left knee. Even though he has said his leg still bothers him, Nadal failed to use it as an excuse. "David is a fantastic player," he said. "When you play up and down against players like David, you know, its very difficult to win." Nadal will play 113th-ranked Pablo Andujar of Spain, who ousted Kei Nishikori 6-3, 7-5 the day after the Japanese player upset Federer. The fourth-seeded Ferrers ability to keep points alive with error-free long rallies gave him an early lead. He used his speed to break twice in the second set, sealing both with approach shots at the net for a 4-2 advantage. Nadal then dug in and broke twice to win the next three games. Ferrer had an opportunity to earn two match points when leading 5-4 and 30-15. He had plenty of time to slam a floating ball into an openn court but instead fired at his opponents feet, allowing Nadal to scoop it over the net.dddddddddddd "It was a tightly contested match," Nadal said. "David deserved it more than I did to reach the semifinals, but that is sport. I was lucky to somehow save that ball down 15-30. "After missing his chance David fell apart a little. He lowered his intensity in the third set and I didnt have to do as much." Nadal was steadier in his shot-making to level in the tiebreaker, and he only got better in the third set. After placing a perfect lob near the baselines, he wowed the Caja Magica crowd by nailing a forehand winner while almost stumbling to the ground en route to building an insurmountable 4-0 lead. Berdych jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set tiebreaker before closing it out when Murray landed a backhand just wide. Murray, who won the tournament on hard courts in 2008, fell to the Czech in just over two hours after Berdychs deep drive forced him to miss for a last time. "He played a better tiebreak(er) than me and then in the second set I had chances," Murray said. "Thats frustrating. I didnt convert a lot of opportunities all week but was able to dig out the previous matches." Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland will meet Berdych in the semifinals after he outlasted Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-2, 6-7 (9), 6-4. Against Medina Garrigues, Williams appeared to be worn down after being blanked in the second set and falling behind 4-2 in the decider. But the defending champion rallied to break the Spaniards serve twice. "I just wasnt really into it, my feet werent moving," Williams said of the second set. "To change it I got up early (before the third set) and did some high knees, some stretching, anything I could to get my intensity back up to where it needs to be." Williams will face Sara Errani of Italy, who downed Ekaterina Makarova 6-4, 6-3. Sharapova will play Ana Ivanovic after the Serb dispatched Angelique Kerber 6-3, 6-1. ' ' '
