One day after signing captain Steven Stamkos to an eight-year contract to keep him from venturing into free agency, the Tampa Bay Lightning inked top defenseman Victor Hedman to an eight-year deal of his own.The extension, which the team announced Friday, will kick in at the start of the 2017-18 season and will pay Hedman $63 million, or $7.875 million annually.Victor has matured into one of the top defensemen in the NHL, and coming off the recent re-signing of our captain, Steven Stamkos, weve secured another extremely important member of our team, general manager Steve Yzerman said in a statement. Im very appreciative of both Victor and [agent] Peter Wallens efforts to reach an agreement with us at this time.Hedman tweeted about the extension Friday.Hedman, 25, had 10 goals and 37 assists for the Lightning last season, his seventh in the NHL. He has 49 goals and 180 assists in 470 career NHL games. The Lightning drafted Hedman with the No. 2 overall pick in 2009.Yzerman wasnt done with his heavy lifting with the Hedman contract. The team also announced Friday afternoon it has signed netminder Andrei Vasilevskiy to a three-year extension.Vasilevskiy, a 21-year-old who played well in relief of the injured Ben Bishop in the Eastern Conference finals against Pittsburgh, will earn an average of $3.5 million annually over the three years of the contract. Its been a good week for us, Yzerman said. The extension provides further evidence that the team might look to move Bishop, 29, who will be entering the final year of his contract next season.Meanwhile, Stamkos, 26, will receive $8.5 million annually on his deal, which begins in 2016-17.?Combined, the Lightning have locked up their two most important assets for the foreseeable future, and both at average annual incomes that will, in theory, make it easier for Yzerman to re-sign other important Lightning players in the future, such as?Ondrej Palat, Tyler Johnson and Alex Killorn. The signings will reinforce the notion that the Lightning will once again be considered a Stanley Cup contender next season. They lost in the finals to the Chicago Blackhawks in 2015 and were defeated in the Eastern Conference finals this year in seven games by the eventual Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins. The Associated Press contributed to this report. FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - This years Ryder Cup doesnt begin for another month, but the drama already kicked into high gear Sunday afternoon.Needing a result of third place or better at The Barclays to move up from the 12th position and claim one of the eight automatic qualifying spots on the United States roster, 54-hole leader Rickie Fowler played his final four holes in 3-over to finish in a share of seventh place.Zach Johnson, who was seventh on the list entering the week and hadnt been outside the top eight since his Open Championship victory last summer, retained the last qualifying position on the team.I just have to continue working on my game and continue getting better, said Fowler, whose fate now rests with U.S. captain Davis Love III. It was almost really good this week.Fowler will now wait and hope for a call from Love, who will make three wild-card selections on Sept. 12 after the BMW Championship and one more Sept. 25, directly after the final round of the Tour Championship. Among those also needing a captains pick are Bubba Watson, Matt Kuchar and Jim Furyk. On Monday, Love said he would consider a number of options before making his captains picks.Anybody in the top 100 has to be our radar because a guy could get hot the next two weeks and move himself to the Tour Championship and be in the running for the FedEx Cup, Love said. And I get to pick him on Sunday night. The subplot between Fowler and Johnson wasnt Sundays only drama. Patrick Reed entered the week eighth in the standings and easily maintained his spot on the team with a one-stroke victory, his first of the season.ddddddddddddwo years ago, Reed was the darling of an otherwise bleak U.S. performance, successfully teaming with Jordan Spieth and shushing Europes home crowd during a singles victory over Henrik Stenson.Spieth was among those who had previously qualified for the team, joining Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Jimmy Walker and Brooks Koepka.Brandt Snedeker also officially made the team Sunday, though after a strong finish at last weeks Wyndham Championship, his position was never really in doubt.Meanwhile, the intrigue continued across the pond as well. Two days before European captain Darren Clarke will announce his three captains picks, Thomas Pieters of Belgium won the Made in Denmark for his third win on the European Tour in the past year.He will be among a strong mix of players vying for those spots that also includes Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer, Russell Knox, Luke Donald and Graeme McDowell. The nine automatic qualifiers for Europe were already previously decided. They are: Rory McIlroy, Danny Willett, Henrik Stenson, Chris Wood, Sergio Garcia, Rafael Cabrera Bello, Justin Rose, Andy Sullivan and Matthew Fitzpatrick. The Ryder Cup will take place Sept. 30-Oct. 2 at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota, with Europe serving as the three-time defending champions. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
