like this years. It could be scary.Game notesFisher was happy with quarterback Deondre Francois after Wednesdays scrimmag
HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- The fourth time, in a field of four, was the charm for Johnny Sauter.Sauter won the inaugural Chase in the Camping World Truck Series with a strong third-place finish at Homestead-Miami Speedway. He beat Matt Crafton, Christopher Bell and Timothy Peters in a race in which the highest-finisher among the four drivers would win the championship. For Sauter, who finished fourth in the standings the last three years, the format produced his first career NASCAR championship. He did it in his first year with GMS Racing after leaving Thorsport Racing.I think a lot of people questioned that move, Sauter said of his move to the young race team.He wasnt sure he had a strong enough truck to get to the front until the last segment of the race. With 50, 60 (laps) to go, I was like `We really got something here and I started picking people off, he said. Im just a small part of this deal. The whole team executed flawlessly tonight. The 38-year-old has had a career year driving the No. 21 Chevrolet for GMS Racing. He won three races, had 12 top-five finishes and a dominant run in the Chase. Sauter won back-to-back races at Martinsville and Texas, and was runner-up at Phoenix last week. Sauters 13 career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victories tie him for 11th most all-time in series history.Crew chief Joe Shear Jr. moved to GMS Racing to work with Sauter and the pairing delivered a title.I knew they had all the pieces in the puzzle, I knew it was a great fit or I wouldnt have done it, Shear said. Its just unbelievable. This is the greatest thing in the world.William Byron won the race -- his seventh victory of the season -- to wrap up the owner championship for Kyle Busch Motorsports. It was bittersweet because it likely should have been Byron celebrating the driver title.Byron was headed toward the win last weekend at Phoenix that would have put him in the final four, but his engine blew in the closing laps. He was eliminated from title contention after the failure. It feels awesome. Its incredible, Byron said of the win. This team has worked hard all year. Just had an unfortunate situation last week that we couldnt control.Busch collected the championship trophy for the second consecutive year and fifth overall.Such a spectacular season by William Bryon, they were flawless, all the way up until Phoenix, Busch said.Tyler Reddick, driving his final race for Brad Keselowski, finished second. Hes moving to an Xfinity Series ride next year for Chip Ganassi.Kyle Larson finished fourth, but led a race-high 76 laps.Crafton, a two-time Truck Series champion, was denied a third title after finishing seventh. He and Sauter waged a decent battle for position during the race, but a poor final run cost Crafton.I kind of figured it was a matter of time. We were just really bad on that last run for whatever reason, he said.Bell finished eighth in trying to win the driver title for Busch.Overall, it wasnt really our year, he said. Just wasnt quite good enough all year long.Timothy Peters was ninth and the lowest-finishing driver of the title contenders.Hey, all in all, we said in the beginning of Daytona that we wanted a shot, Peters said. We had that down here, and we came up just a little bit short. We know what we need to do over the off season, and cant wait for Daytona.Best Fake Air Max 97 . Dallas hasnt ruled out the star quarterback for Sunday nights game against Philadelphia, but all signs point to Romos back injury pushing Kyle Orton into the starting role after two years of limited play as the backup. Surely Ortons name isnt the first that comes to mind for fans wanting a change after years of damaging interceptions, fumbles or, most infamously, the field goal flub when Romo dropped the snap on a kick that could have won his first playoff game in 2006.TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida States defense has never lacked for swagger or confidence under Jimbo Fisher. As the Seminoles continue preseason preparations for their Sept. 5 opener in Orlando against Mississippi, the defense is hoping its actions on the field are as boisterous as their words to opposing offenses.I like how were savages this year. I know when its time to play, were going to be ready to play because we practice like that, junior safety Tre Marshall said.Florida State returns six defensive starters from a 10-3 team. It finished ninth in the nation in points allowed per game (17.5) and didnt allow any opponent to score 25 points or more until a 38-24 loss to Houston in the Peach Bowl. The Seminoles were also ranked high nationally in yards per pass (fourth, 5.6) and yards per play (10th, 4.68). Defensive coordinator Charles Kelly was happy with those areas, but he is looking for marked improvement in two others -- pass rush and getting off the field on third down. After getting only 17 sacks in 2014, Florida States pass rush nearly doubled that last year with 32, which was tied for fourth in the Atlantic Coast Conference. From 2010-12, Florida State led the ACC in sacks, averaging 41.7 per year.We always want to generate more pass rush. We improved last year in affecting the quarterback but we can still get better at that. There are different ways to do that. You can play more variations in the secondary, Kelly said.Senior defensive end DeMarcus Walker was the first player since 2012 to post a double-digit sack season when he had 10.5 last year. Walker had the second-most votes for a defensive player on the All-ACC preseason team. Sophomore safety Derwin James, who is the teams top returning tackler, has played rush end in some situations and could get some increased sack opportunitiess.ddddddddddddKelly thinks if the Seminoles can get consistent pressure on the quarterback that could help put opponents in more third-and-long situations. Last season Florida State had the fourth-worst conversion rate as teams converted 39.23 percent of the time. With the units speed and versatility, some are thinking the defense can be as good as it was in 2013 when the Seminoles went 14-0 and won their third national championship. Those are lofty comparisons considering seven members of that unit started on NFL teams last season and Jalen Ramsey went fifth overall to Jacksonville in this years draft.I feel like everyone knows their jobs and roles this year which is going to allow us to play fast all the time, James said. Last years team was great but I really like this years. It could be scary.Game notesFisher was happy with quarterback Deondre Francois after Wednesdays scrimmage.
