LONDON -- Novak Djokovics shot at a true Grand Slam came to a stunning halt Saturday at Wimbledon as the top seed lost to American Sam Querrey. In a match interrupted Saturday by three rain delays after being suspended in progress because of showers a night earlier, the hard-serving Querrey ousted Djokovic 7-6 (6), 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (5) in a third-round match at the All England Club.Congratulation to Sam. He played a terrific match, said Djokovic, who had won the past four major titles and was bidding to become the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to win them all in the same year. He serves very well, as he usually does. I think that part of his game was brutal today. He made a lot of free points with the first serve. Just well done. He just overpowered me.Djokovic had won 30 consecutive Grand Slam matches, the longest such run by a man in nearly a half-century. He didnt just appear to be unbeatable at the majors. He was.No longer. His magical streaks are gone, including two successive titles at the All England Club and 28 Grand Slam quarterfinal appearances in a row, all brought to a sudden, stunning end by a player who has never participated in a major quarterfinal. With 31 aces against as good a returner as there is, Querrey did what no one else could for so long.He just overpowered me, said Djokovic, who added that he wasnt 100 percent healthy but wouldnt say what was wrong. He said he ? will not play in the Davis Cup quarterfinals against Britain this month.I believe in positive things in life, and I managed to win four Grand Slams in a row -- two different seasons, though, he said. I want to try to focus on that rather than failure.Play ended for the day at Wimbledon with four mens third-round matches suspended in progress Saturday night. That includes No. 7 Richard Gasquet leading Albert Ramos-Vinolas, No. 18 John Isner leading No. 12 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and No. 32 Lucas Pouille leading 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro, all by two sets to one.No. 15 Nick Kyrgios and No. 22 Feliciano Lopez were even at a set apiece.Things began looking bleak for Djokovic, the world No. 1, when the match began Friday and he dropped the first two sets against Querrey, an American ranked 41st. After play was halted by rain, a recurring theme in this contest and the tournament as a whole, Djokovic came back out Saturday and played much better. He took the third set, then went up a break in the fourth at 5-4 by pounding a forehand winner that brought coach Boris Becker to his feet. But serving to even the match at two sets apiece, Djokovic faltered. That game included two calls against Djokovic that, according to the BBC broadcast, were incorrect, but he was out of challenges and couldnt ask for a review. Querrey, 0-for-6 on break points in the set until then, converted No. 7 when Djokovics poor forehand volley found the net for 5-all.In the closing tiebreaker, Djokovic led 3-1, but Querrey hung in there, and a stray forehand by the big favorite sailed wide to end it.Probably not the best hes ever played, said Querrey, who plays Frances ?Nicolas Mahut? next, but not the worst hes ever played.Said Djokovic: I had my chances maybe in the fourth set, serving for the set. In the tiebreak, I was leading. Just wasnt feeling the ball as well as I wished. But thats sport. Its the first loss for Djokovic at any major tournament in more than a year: He was beaten by Stan Wawrinka in the French Open final in June 2015. Since then, Djokovic won his third trophy at Wimbledon last July, his second at the US Open in September, his sixth at the Australian Open in January, and his first at the French Open less than a month ago.As I said, you know, in sports everything is possible, Djokovic said. If youre playing somebody of as a high quality as Sam Querrey is on this surface with a big serve, anything can happen. I was a few points away from losing last year against Kevin Anderson in a very similar match on the same court. Sometimes it works in your favor, sometimes against. You got to deal with that.Laver remarked Saturday that he felt Djokovic might very well be the player who would end his distinction as the last man to win a calendar-year Grand Slam. But as he watched the match against Querrey, Laver said, he was struck by Djokovics lower-than-usual level of play.?That was sort of quite a surprise, seeing Novak getting knocked out. I thought he was going to get the title, Laver said in a telephone interview. I dont know whether it was the pressure or whether he wasnt feeling up to full power. ... It didnt look like he was ready to play a big match.Querrey, who became the first American to beat Djokovic at a Grand Slam event since Andy Roddick (2009), finished the match with 31 aces. Querrey improved to 21-1 in his career when he wins the first two sets.Im really excited. Its an unbelievable win, Querrey said in a postmatch interview before heading off to play doubles. To do it here at Wimbledon is really special. ... I ? served well the whole time, played a great tiebreaker at the end to get the win.He has never made it past the fourth round at any major. The last time an American man beat the No. 1 seed at a Grand Slam event, Andre Agassi ousted Lleyton Hewitt in the semifinals of the 2002 US Open.Querrey will be joined in the fourth round by countryman Steve Johnson, who ? beat Grigor Dimitrov 6-7 (6), 7-6 (3), 6-4, 6-2 to reach the round of 16 for the first time in 17 Grand Slam appearances. Johnson will play Roger Federer? next.Andy Murray made his way into the fourth round by beating Australias John Millman 6-3, 7-5, 6-2.In other action, fifth-seeded Kei Nishikori also reached the fourth round -- equaling his best performance at the All England Club -- with a quick 7-5, 6-3, 7-5 win over Andrey Kuznetsov of Russia.Nishikori, who made only 14 unforced errors, will next face Marin Cilic, who beat the Japanese star in the 2014 U.S. Open final.Since then, Nishikori has won both of his matches with Cilic, both last year on outdoor hard courts. Their fourth-round match will be their first on grass.Other seeded players to advance include ? No. 11 David Goffin? and No. 14 Roberto Bautista Agut, who dispatched No. 19 Bernard Tomic in straight sets.Meanwhile, the second round was finally completed -- two days later than normal because of weather issues -- as Alexander Zverev? beat Mikhail Youzhny?6-4, 3-6, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2.Action will resume Sunday. Rain has been a real problem at Wimbledon this week, and organizers have decided to play on the middle Sunday for only the fourth time in the tournaments 139-year history. The Associated Press contributed to this report. LAS VEGAS -- St. Marys is used to playing in the Orleans Arena every March, having been there annually since 2009 for the West Coast Conference Tournament.Due to scheduling conflicts, the 15th-ranked Gaels got an early season look at the venue on Sunday, and earned a 76-63 victory over UAB.They werent coming to our place and we werent going there and we decided to play in Vegas -- everybody likes to go to Vegas to play games this time of year, St. Marys coach Randy Bennett said. It was good for us. It was a good basketball game in non-conference and I think itll help us down the road.I think itll help us resume wise, and I think itll help us just as a team, playing against a team that athletic and that big. Theyre used to winning, they dont go away. So, we had to play well and we did play well.Jock Landale scored 20 points to lead No. 15 St. Marys (5-0). He was 9 of 11 from the field. In doing a much better job of not getting beat off the dribble, something Bennett was looking for in the Gaels stopover in Las Vegas, they did a good job of limiting UABs shot selection at key moments. The defensive stops allowed St. Marys to go on significant runs to keep the Blazers well behind. The Gaels outscored UAB (3-3) 30-16 during a 14-minute stretch in the first half to open their largest lead of the game, 40-23.We had some good stretches, and we need more of them, Bennett said. We played 40 minutes tonight, we probably had 25 minutes of what I thought was good defense. Thats got to be closer to 37 or 38 minutes, thats where we need to get. We were closer to that last year and we have to get back there. The Blazers wouldnt go away, however, as they came out of the locker room and used a 16-7 run to cut the lead to seven, at 50-43 with 14:33 left. But the Gaels used a 13-3 run of their own, ignited by three consecutive 3-pointers, to push the lead back to double digits, at 63-46 with 9:29 remaining.Though it is just five games into the season, St. Marys looked in mid-season form for most of the game, with solid ball movement and noticeable chemistry the Blazers are still looking for without junior point guard Nick Norton, whoo was lost for the season with a torn ACL.ddddddddddddWe get along so well on and off the court and I think that adds to our trust factor, Landale said. We never really doubt each other to make the shot or an open play. We just get how each one of us operates individually and it makes things a lot easier.Emmett Naar, Stefan Gonzalez and Calvin Hermanson each scored 12 points for the Gaels. They were 27 of 52 (.519) from the field, including 50 percent (13 of 26) from 3-point range. St. Marys also hit all nine of its free throws.Meanwhile, the Blazers continue to struggle without Norton, who came into his third year as a starter but was lost for the season just 15 minutes into the season-opener.The Blazers shot 47 percent from the field, hitting 26 of 55, and were led by Chris Cokley, who had a season-high 20 points. Deion Lavender also had a season high with 12.I was proud of the way we fought back and competed and made it a good game, but weve been doing that and weve shown flashes, UAB coach Rob Ehsan said. Were going to have to figure out how to play consistently at a higher level, and I think were still learning that against the best teams in the country.BIG PICTUREThe undefeated Gaels look to finish the opening month unscathed this week, and then will enjoy five straight home games to start December. Given their competition, and their slate from Dec. 8-22, its conceivable St. Marys can open West Coast Conference play 11-0.RESERVE MINUTESBennett said he plans to utilize his reserves much more starting with the next game, with hopes of giving quality minutes to Tanner Krebs, Jordan Ford, Dane Pineau, Jordan Hunter to get their confidence up in time for conference play. The first five games have been pretty tough, so its been hard to be liberal with the substitutions, he said. We have another tough one with Stanford on Wednesday, but I think we can get some guys that are on the bench in the game.UP NEXTSt. Marys: At Stanford on Wednesday night.UAB: Host Alabama A&M on Tuesday night.
