CLEVELAND -- A long night at the ballpark left the Cleveland Indians weary and drenched. A solution, however, was easy to find. "Everybodys tired," joked Indians manager Terry Francona. "Its amazing...show up, have 12 pieces of bacon and a Red Bull and go get em." While the pregame meal may have played a factor in Saturdays 5-0 win over Tampa Bay, the Indians found other reasons that led to their success. Ubaldo Jimenez pitched eight scoreless innings while Jason Giambi and Asdrubal Cabrera hit two-run homers in the game that began about 10 hours following the conclusion of Friday nights contest that ended at 2:53 a.m. on Saturday after nearly five hours of rain delays. Despite his big day, which included and RBI single in the third, Giambi admitted he was exhausted. "Im delirious right now," he said. "I feel like Pinocchio with no strings. My last two at-bats I thought about bunting because of the bat speed that I have, but then I said, I have to run. I was done." Jimenez (4-3) gave the Indians exactly what they needed. The right-hander allowed four hits and struck out seven in stopping Tampa Bays six-game winning streak. The Rays, who rolled to a 9-2 win earlier Saturday morning, had only two runners reach second base. "On a day where the only two people probably out there who werent tired were the starting pitchers, he gave us every bit what we needed," Francona said. Giambi homered in his third straight game to give the Indians a 2-0 lead in the second. He added an RBI single in third while Cabreras two-run blast came in the fifth. Tampa Bay right-hander Chris Archer (0-1), called up from Triple A-Durham before the game, allowed five runs in four innings. He faced three batters in the fifth and was pulled after Nick Swisher lined a single off his glove following Cabreras home run. The force of the blow knocked Archer to the ground. He was uninjured but was removed by manager Joe Maddon. No one could blame either team for feeling tired after a long night at the ballpark Friday when three rain delays totalling 4:49 pushed a game that began on the last day of May into the early hours of the first day in June. Neither team took batting practice on the field Saturday for the game that began at 1:05 p.m. "Its part of the job," Swisher said. "Its what we get paid to do. We were here early this morning. Guys were pumped up. We had the music blasting. We needed a win like this, especially with the way early this morning ended." Maddon admitted his team was dragging a bit. "Our guys legitimately were tired today and I dont blame them," he said. "I really respected their effort today. It was a tough day to come back and play this game. Well get a good nights sleep and come back and do well tomorrow." Jimenez, winning for the first time since May 11, came within three outs of his fourth career complete game shutout and first since 2011 while pitching for Colorado. Desmond Jennings seventh-inning double was the only hit he allowed that left the infield. The only walk Jimenez, who threw 108 pitches, gave up was to Matt Joyce leading off the game. "I felt really good," said Jimenez, who had his longest outing of the season. "The guys had a crazy game last night after waiting for so long to play." "The biggest guy was Ubaldo," Giambi said. "He was the guy who made it all happen." Vinnie Pestano pitched the ninth for Clevelands eighth shutout of the season. After being held to one hit by four pitchers in Fridays marathon, the Indians woke up against Archer. Swisher drew a leadoff walk in the second before Giambi homered to right on a 2-1 pitch. The veteran slugger also hit a pinch-hit home run Monday against Cincinnati and added a three-run homer against the Reds on Wednesday. The 42-year-old Giambi, signed to a minor league contract in February, singled home Jason Kipnis in the third. Kipnis started the rally with a one-out double. Giambi has five homers and 19 RBIs in 69 at-bats for the season. Kipnis also started the fifth-inning rally with a leadoff single and scored when Cabrera hit an 0-1 pitch to right for his fifth homer of the season. Archer, the Indians fifth-round selection in 2006, gave up seven hits, struck out four and walked three. CLEVELAND -- A rough season for Yan Gomes has taken a cruel twist.Just as Clevelands catcher was about to return to the lineup after missing six weeks with a separated shoulder, Gomes broke his right wrist during a minor league rehab assignment and is likely done for the season.Gomes sustained a non-displaced fracture when he was hit by a pitch Wednesday night for Double-A Akron. The 29-year-old had been expected to be activated from the disabled list Friday and catch Corey Kluber when the AL Central-leading Indians opened a crucial three-game series against Detroit.Instead, hell be seen by a specialist who will determine whether hell play again in 2016.Its an unfortunate blow for Gomes, who was already struggling at the plate when he separated his right shoulder on July 17 when he fell trying to beat out a play at first base in Minnesota.Manager Terry Francona felt badly for Gomes, who was limited to 95 games last season because of a knee injury.I think its the understatement that a few things have gone wrong, Francona said. I think when those types of things happen, and they do happen, I fall back on, I get to see how hard he worked to come back. When guys get challenged, its nice to see that he doesnt tuck his tail and run. If this is something that takes a while to heal, hes going to continue to work.Thats what youre looking for. Things do happen. Things are going to continue to happen, were glad that we have fighters who want to come back and be every bit as good or better than they were. The Indians had hoped to have Gomes back for the stretch run as they try to clinch their first division title since 2007.dddddddddddd He would have been another right-handed bat and his familiarity with Clevelands pitching staff cant be underestimated. With Gomes out, the Indians will continue to play Roberto Perez and Chris Gomes behind the plate.Cleveland has withstood other major injuries this season. Left fielder Michael Brantley was limited to only 11 games following shoulder surgery and starter Carlos Carrasco missed six weeks with a hamstring injury.Francona has been impressed with his teams resiliency. Those are guys you want on your side, he said. And were not the only team. Shoot, there are a lot of good players in this game. But these are our guys, and I get proud of them, not just for hitting a home run but Gomer trying to come back through all this. I dont think anybody would have said anything had he not come back from the shoulder. But he worked so damn hard that he kind of willed himself.Francona also revealed that right fielder Lonnie Chisenhall is day-to-day with an abdominal issue. He underwent an MRI, which Francona said came back good. The Indians will be cautious with Chisenhall. When he plays, we dont want him to hurt himself, Francona said. So were trying to balance giving him a day or two and then well keep re-evaluating him. We dont want to pinch-hit him and have him run out of the box and hurt himself. Were trying to balance that now and well continue to do that. ' ' '
