A look at Fridays NFL preseason matchups:ROMO READY TO GODallas quarterback Tony Romo will make his preseason debut at home against Miami on Friday night a week after his top option, receiver Dez Bryant, made a surprise appearance and scored a touchdown in the first game in Los Angeles since 1994.Romo should be joined for a brief appearance by tight end Jason Witten, but rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott will wait another week for his first pro outing. The fourth overall pick in the draft was slowed by a mild hamstring injury in training camp, which wrapped up Wednesday in California. It will be Round 2 for Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill and crew after gaining 8 yards on seven snaps in an exhibition opener more notable for three Miami takeaways in the second quarter of a 27-10 win over the New York Giants. The Miami offense is much more unsettled than Dallas in terms of who will start, including a competition at running back between Arian Foster and Jay Ajayi. Foster, limited to four games because of torn Achilles tendon in the last of his seven seasons in Houston, sat out the preseason opener. Its been a while since Ive been hit, said Foster, a four-time Pro Bowler. In games, its different. You want to get that feel of getting hit week in and week out again.---REDSKINS HAVE ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENTWashington Redskins coach Jay Gruden didnt even need to think about what he wanted to see his team improve in its second preseason game Friday against the New York Jets: the running game and penalties. The Redskins had 79 yards rushing on 24 carries, a 3.3-yard average that was stunted by four tackles for loss. Two carries by No. 1 running back Matt Jones went for a combined 1 yard, and Gruden didnt want to use the absence of left tackle Trent Williams and left guard Shawn Lauvao as an excuse.I think we should be good, Gruden said Wednesday. Were going to keep trying to push it. The Jets are excellent against the run. If I recall last year, we couldnt run the length of my arm against them. Theyre very physical. They play some fronts that are very difficult to run against. So it will be a great test for us -- our physicality -- and see if we can get anything going.Gruden wants physicality without flags after Washington racked up 123 yards on 14 penalties in its preseason-opening 23-17 loss at the Atlanta Falcons last week. Allowing a touchdown on a kick return wasnt great, either, so all facets of the team have something to work on.You want us to play a clean football game and you want us to improve on our physicality and obviously eliminate the big plays on defense, Gruden said. You need to take away the big plays and the penalties, play a pretty good game.---A WEEK AT THE BEACHAfter a week in San Diego, a trip that included the hospitalization of their coach, the Arizona Cardinals plan to play most of their starters no more than 16 to 18 plays in their preseason game against the Chargers on Friday night.Coach Bruce Arians is back with the team after spending Tuesday night in a San Diego-area hospital with a stomach ailment. He later called the episode no big deal.New right tackle D.J. Humphries and rookie cornerback Brandon Williams are the starters who will play a little more because they need the experience. Arians wasnt concerned with Arizonas 30-10 loss to Oakland in its preseason opener last week because the starters played well in their brief time on the field. The Cardinals and Chargers held joint practices on Tuesday and Wednesday and players on both sides said it was helpful to go against someone besides a teammate for a change.San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers said the practices had a game-like feel.---AP Sports Writers Stephen Whyno in Ashburn, Va.; Schuyler Dixon in Irving, Texas; and Bob Baum in Phoenix contributed to this report.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFLNFL China Jerseys . Robinson finished with 17 points, all but two in the second half, and Lawson had 14 after halftime and finished with a game-high 11 assists as the Nuggets handed Dallas its first home loss in eight games this season. J.J. Hickson led Denver with 22, and Kenneth Faried added 10 points and 10 rebounds. It was 4-all in the fourth set of the decisive fifth match. Jack Sock was about to serve. With his eyes half-closed, his opponent, Borna Coric, tapped his index finger against his left temple a few times. Then he made a fist and banged it lightly a few times against his forehead.Focus. Focus. Focus.Thats exactly what Coric displayed in the tense moments of this Davis Cup battle. He reeled off the last seven points to end the match -- and the tie -- in exactly three hours, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, giving Croatia a stunning win against the United States on Sunday.Croatia had started the weekend in Portland, Oregon, down 2-0 after Fridays singles matches. A done deal, right? The U.S. had been 157-3 when it won its first two matches, while Croatia had never recovered from a 2-0 deficit to win. But suddenly, after Mike?and Bob Bryan fell Saturday and John Isner lost his reverse singles rubber earlier Sunday, it came down to Sock and Coric.Coric is just 19. But he knew the match would go to whoever was mentally stronger. Earlier in the year, he had clinched the first-round tie against Belgium in a similar situation. Sock, while 23, had been flung in the deep end. This was his first Davis Cup tie on home soil. Both men felt the pressure, only one mastered it.I was fighting with myself. But these guys, they were all the time here for me, Coric told the crowd after he clinched for the visitors, gesturing to the Croatian bench.Coric took up tennis at age 8 after watching Croatia clinch its sole Davis Cup title in 2005.That year, Croatias march to the title began with a comparable shocker: an upset of a strong U.S. team led by Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick. Somehow, it probably wont be much consolation to U.S. captain Jim Courier, Sock & Co.This was a devastating blow to the Americans, whose male players had left Wimbledon with a lot to feel good about. The two singles players, No. 16 Isner and No. 26 Sock, made the third round beforre losing to higher-ranked players.dddddddddddd Sock had never gone the distance in a best-of-five match until this year, when he won two of three going into this tie. Then on Friday, Sock made it three of four by digging himself out of a very deep hole. He lost the first two sets to Marin Cilic but surged back to win. It was the second time in eight days that Cilic lost after leading by two sets. (Roger Federer pulled the other comeback in the Wimbledon quarterfinals.) Isner crushed Coric in the second match, giving up just 11 games. It was an impressive display of American grit and firepower. After his humiliating loss to Sock, Cilic declared he would be playing doubles, even though it wasnt part of the game plan. He teamed with Ivan Dodig to hammer the Bryan brothers, inflicting just the fifth loss in 29 matches for the U.S. doubles specialists. The tie turned on that upset.Fired up, Cilic met Isner in the fourth match. Isner played a great first set, but Cilic outdueled him in the tiebreaker and went on to win in straight sets.In my first match, I didnt show how much spirit we have, said Cilic, the elder statesman of the Croatian squad. I didnt show my emotion. I wanted it to be different today to show how motivated we are.The win set the stage for Corics heroics. The only other time he had played Sock came on the slow red clay of the 2015 French Open, with the American rolling in straight sets. This one was different. While Sock seemed to handle the occasion well, he was haunted by the same inconsistency that hampers him on tour. Hes a wonderful athlete who hasnt quite harnessed all of his energy, so it is often scattered in every direction instead of being modulated and channeled into a single productive one.You could say he sometimes lacks focus. That doesnt appear to be Corics problem.
