ORLANDO, Fla. -- The WNBA continues to be the standard-bearer when it comes to hiring women and minorities in top-level positions. The league earned a combined A-plus for its race and gender hiring practices in the report card by The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sports (TIDES) that was released on Wednesday. For the year, the league received A-plus for race and an A for gender with an accumulative 95.5 points, which is just a percentage point below its record of 96.5 set in 2014.Its the 12th straight year in the 20-year existence of the WNBA that the league has posted at least an A for its combined grade on the report issued by the University of Central Floridas TIDES.Dr. Richard Lapchick, the primary author of the report, said the impressive marks go well beyond the fact that its a league for women so diversity might be perceived as a given.I think of college sport where more than 60 percent of the womens college teams are coached by men and more 50 percent of the assistant coaches are men, he said. So it doesnt necessarily matter that its a womens sport.I think they have taken the leadership seriously, have paid attention to diversity right from the start.TIDES also issues annual race and gender report cards for the NBA, NFL, MLB, MLS and college sports. The NBA received a combined A on its most recent report card when it comes to racial and gender hiring practices, while the NFL, MLS, MLB and college sports all received combined grades of B during the last year. But the WNBA continues to be the gold standard among sports leagues because of its large numbers of minorities and women in key leadership positions. It starts at the top where Lisa Borders became the WNBA president in February, making her the second consecutive African-American woman to hold the position after replacing Laurel J. Richie. Its critically important, Lapchick said of Borders appointment. I think the WNBA has made that example possible for the other sports entities to consider a woman of color to lead their operations. There are 14 women and seven people of color who have held ownership positions with WNBA franchise in 2016. Also this season there were three African-American head coaches, which was the same as 2015, and the number of women head coaches decreased by one this season to five. The recently crowned WNBA champion Los Angeles Sparks have been the shining example of the WNBAs exemplary status in race and gender hiring practices with Magic Johnson as the team owner along with team Christine Simmons and general manager Penny Toler, who are both women of color.I think it was interesting this year that the Sparks won with probably the most diverse front office in the league, Lapchick said. But while most of the numbers were positive for the WNBA, there still seems to be room for improvement. The report card gave the league a D-plus for gender in senior administration after a drastic decrease from 34.4 percent in 2015 to 24.4 percent in 2016. The percentage in this area has been dropping every year since 2016, according to Lapchicks report. This is true across all of the other report cards at the team level in team leadership positions, Lapchick said. There is definite room for improvement. Aside from that the WNBA is ahead of everybody else in virtually all categories and has been for years. Discount Jordans From China . Neither of Alabamas two young quarterbacks did enough to separate themselves from the group in the Crimson Tides 52-6 win over Southern Cal.For the second straight week, coach Nick Saban will play both true freshman Jalen Hurts and redshirt freshman Blake Barnett when the top-ranked Crimson Tide hosts Western Kentucky at 3:30 ET Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa.I thought that both guys were a little shaky in the beginning in terms of how they played, and I think that the longer they played in the game, the better they played, Saban said. That goes for both guys.I still think that we need to play two quarterbacks to try to gain the experience and knowledge and consistency that we need to see. We may do it a little different way than we did last week. But I think well probably still play two guys in the game.Barnett earned the start and completed 5-of-6 passes for 100 yards, a touchdown and no turnovers.Hurts entered the game after the second series and accounted for four touchdowns (two passing, two rushing). But he also turned the ball over twice.Jalen did a nice job in some of the things he did, turned the ball over a couple of times, Saban said. When Blake went back in the game, he actually played with a lot more confidence and a lot more poise.I think we need to continue to develop both of those players. It was encouraging that both players played better as they played in the game, which should be expected of freshmen.Hopefully, well see big improvement in this game.Alabama isnt playing a top-20 team like USC, but Western Kentucky is no slouch, despite being outscored in two previous meetings with Alabama by a combined score of 76-7. The Hilltoppers were ranked in the top 25 last season. They lost their starting quarterback from last year, but the Hilltoppers return a ton of starters from last years group.Theyve got one of the most prolific passing attacks that were going to see and some very good players to implement, SSaban said.dddddddddddd They play really tough, physical defensive football. This is a good team. The Hilltoppers opened their season with a 46-14 rout of Rice. Taking over for Brandon Doughty at quarterback, junior Mike White set an efficiency record when he passed for 517 yards in completing 25 of his 31 attempts in his WKU debut. He came to the Hilltoppers after two years at South Florida, where he had 15 starts.Wide receiver Taywan Taylor had four receptions covering at least 25 yards among his five receptions, and wide receiver Nicholas Norris had an 87-yard touchdown reception among his team-high seven receptions. We had two teams in our league that actually lost to teams that were nowhere near this good, Saban said, referring to Southern Mississippis win at Kentucky and South Alabamas win at Mississippi State. Nowhere near what they accomplished a year ago.Nowhere near the number of players coming back. These are not things that we can take at all for granted. We need to get ready to play this game as if were playing a really good football team, because we are.As for Hilltoppers coach Jeff Brohm, he has the requisite respect for the Tide. Were not blind, he said. We see what everyone else sees. This is the very best team in the country. Theyve got tremendous talent, great size, great speed at every position. There are no weaknesses.Theyre coached by the best coach in the country. Hes been there, hes done that, hes proven it. But our guys will be excited for this opportunity to go down there and play a caliber team like Alabama -- an SEC opponent, national champions, at their place, their first home game.I think our guys will be ready. Theyll look forward to this challenge. Were looking forward to seeing how we measure up. It will be a tough game, a tough matchup. We understand how tough this game will be. ' ' '
