RIO DE JANEIRO -- Brazilian soldiers were on the streets Saturday, checking out spots around the city that will get intense security when the Rio de Janeiro Olympics open in just under four weeks.Armored vehicles and trucks carrying troops were accompanied by soldiers decked out in camouflage gear and matching helmets, with rifles slung over their shoulders. The soldiers covered the city -- from Copacabana Beach to the central train station and the renovated port area.Rios rising crime rate is at the top of a long list of problems confronting South Americas first games: the Zika epidemic, severe water pollution, a crushing recession and slow ticket sales. In addition, Brazil President Dilma Rousseff faces an impeachment trial that is likely to start just after the Olympics end.The one-day show of force was intense with the Olympics set for Aug. 5-21.What we are doing today is patrolling and checking out the areas where we can deploy during the games, Brazilian army spokesman Colonel Mario Medina said.He said the full deployment would begin on July 24 and continue through the end of the Paralympic Games. Those games are Sept. 7-18.Rio de Janeiro will use about 85,000 soldiers and police to secure the games, about twice as many as London four years ago. About 10,500 athletes are expected for the Olympics with 300,000 to 500,000 foreign tourists. We wont have a problem during the Olympics, Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes said Saturday. Id say Rio will be the most secure place in the world during this period. The state of Rio de Janeiro has acknowledged its broke, which has delayed salaries for police and hospital workers and raised worries about security in an already crime-ridden city.Passengers arriving recently at Rios international airport have been greeted by police holding up banners that read: Welcome to Hell.Saturdays deployment comes in a wake of reports of rising violence, which included mangled body parts washing up on Copacabana Beach, and sailors from Australia and Spain being robbed as they trained for the games.Human Rights Watch said that police have killed 645 people in Rio so far this year. It says some were most likely the result of the legitimate use of force, but many others were extrajudicial executions.Officials are also worried about terrorism and say they are they are working with foreign governments to detect any threats.---AP video journalist Diarlei Rodrigues contributed to this report.---Stephen Wade on Twitter: http://twitter.com/StephenWadeAP . Lamonsoff, spoke at a news conference as the couple, Jasmine Besiso and Myrone Powell, held hands nearby a day after their federal lawsuit alleged Barnes choked and knocked Besiso unconscious before both players attacked Powell with punches and kicks inside a Manhattan nightclub on Monday.Lamonsoff said Barnes attacked Besiso, a hairstylist, after trying to choke another woman earlier in the night. He said he hopes the other woman comes forward to authorities. He said Besiso and Powell didnt know the players before the altercation. He said the players were using their celebrity status and vast resources to distort the truth. In an Instagram post Monday, Barnes said: Theres always two sides to a story .. The side the media consistently tries to paint of me .... And what actually happened! Dont believe everything you read.Attorney Alex Spiro, representing both players, said, We dont believe a crime was committed, and were continuing to cooperate with the authorities.Spiro declined to comment on the lawsuit or on whether his clients had spoken to police or prosecutors. Police said earlier in the week they were looking to speak with Barnes, who had left the nightclub with Cousins before police arrived.Lamonsooff did not specify how much money he seeks from the civil lawsuit.ddddddddddddThe lawsuit said that Barnes choked Besiso and that Powell, her boyfriend, intervened. It said Cousins then punched Powell as Barnes knocked Besiso unconscious with his elbow.Barnes and Cousins and others who were with them at the nightclub then punched and kicked Powell, the lawsuit said. The couple were treated at a hospital. No one was arrested.Besiso said she was outraged and disgusted by whats happened to me. She added: I want the truth to come out.Powell, one eye swollen and bruised, said he was appalled that video of the players leaving the club showed them boasting and gloating about the encounter.Besiso and Powell, a video director and photographer, live in New York.Lamonsoff said he believed there are video recordings from inside the club, though he had not seen them. He said videotapes, witness testimony and medical records that showed serious injuries to his clients would support the lawsuit. He said the lawsuit was filed to hold Barnes and Cousins accountable for their deplorable and cowardly actions.A year ago, Barnes was suspended for two games after he drove to the home of his now ex-wife to confront her new boyfriend, then-New York Knicks coach Derek Fisher. Fisher late wrote in an article that there was no fight but that Barnes had thrown punches. ' ' '
