NEW YORK -- The Arizona Diamondbacks believe they have the pitching necessary to keep their winning streak going. Unfortunately for the New York Mets, their offensive firepower, or lack thereof, might be enough to keep their season spiraling out of control. The Diamondbacks will look to complete an unlikely sweep Thursday afternoon when they visit the Mets in the finale of a three-game series at Citi Field. Arizona won its third straight game Wednesday night when catcher Oscar Hernandez hit a go-ahead homer in the 12th inning of a 3-2 victory.Rookie right-hander Braden Shipley will make his fourth career start when he takes the mound for the 12:10 ET game. Shipley did not factor into the decision in his most recent start last Friday when he allowed two runs, four hits and six walks while striking out two in six innings in Arizonas 3-2, 11-inning win over the Milwaukee Brewers. The Diamondbacks (47-66) will be thrilled if Shipley can approximate the results produced Tuesday and Wednesday by right-hander Zack Greinke and left-hander Robbie Ray, who combined to allow three runs in 13 innings in their starts.Ray threw seven shutout innings Wednesday night, when he was in line for the win until closer Jake Barrett gave up a two-run pinch-homer to Kelly Johnson.Shipleys going to come out here (Thursday) and do a good job and were going to do our best to get this sweep here, Ray said.A sweep by the Diamondbacks would provide a little bit of solace in a lost season while providing a potentially lethal blow to the playoff hopes of the reeling Mets (57-56), who are trying to hang on in the race for the second wild card in the National League. New York is 2 1/2 games behind the Miami Marlins and the St. Louis Cardinals. We havent really had the season that we wanted to, but were still coming out every day, Ray said. Wins like these are huge for us.Gut-wrenching losses like Wednesdays are becoming commonplace for the Mets, who have lost their last seven one-run games dating to July 27.If you cant get over it, and youre going to let it linger in this league, youre going to have a tough time winning, Mets manager Terry Collins said. The Mets have not won consecutive games since July 6-7. They are 10-18 since then, a stretch in which New York has scored three runs or fewer 18 times.Weve got to find a groove here, Johnson said. I know one thing: These things tend to change. I think eventually well get on a little bit of a run, and its going to be fun when we do. Weve got some time left to do it.Right-hander Noah Syndergaard is scheduled to oppose Shipley. Syndergaard is 0-3 with a 3.49 ERA in his last five starts. He took the loss last Friday when he gave up four runs, seven hits and two walks while striking out seven in six innings as the Mets fell to the Detroit Tigers 4-3. Randy Jones Jersey . -- Jakob Silfverberg is making himself right at home with the Anaheim Ducks, scoring four goals in his first four games. Jose Pirela Padres Jersey . -- Ty Montgomery had 290 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns, and fifth-ranked Stanford held on to beat No. http://www.padressale.com/padres-franmil-reyes-jersey/ . Burke is expected to miss two to three months after breaking a finger in the teams third preseason game. Tinsley, a 10-year veteran, spent the last two seasons in Utah, where the point guard averaged 3. Greg Garcia Jersey .Y. -- Leading 3-0 with only 11:25 left, the Colorado Avalanche committed a seemingly meaningless penalty to give the New York Islanders a power play. Franmil Reyes Jersey . Oaklands loss to Seattle clinched the ALs best record for the Red Sox with one day to spare in the regular season. "I think everybody was kind of watching," catcher David Ross said. "Demp (Ryan Dempster) came out before he went to the bullpen and was just yelling that they lost. ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Jourdan Lewis leaped, fully extended his right arm, squeezed the point of the football into his palm and pinned it against his hip.No. 4 Michigan needed the spectacular play to seal its latest victory, the first one that wasnt a rout this season.Wilton Speight threw a tiebreaking, 46-yard touchdown pass to Amara Darboh midway through the fourth quarter and Lewis made his spectacular play near midfield with 2:15 left, helping the Wolverines hold on to beat No. 8 Wisconsin 14-7 on Saturday. The interception was reminiscent of a one-handed reception famously made by a New York Giants receiver.Ive seen Odell Beckham do that, Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh said. The most impressive thing about it was he jumped a little early. The Wolverines (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) beat a top-10 opponent for the first time since a Rich Rodriguez-coached team rallied to beat the ninth-ranked Badgers in 2008. And it was a defensive struggle throughout.Wisconsin (4-1, 1-1) had the ball at its 8 with 2:59 and no timeouts left with a chance to beat a third team ranked in the top 10. The Badgers went for it on fourth-and-10 from its 8, and Alex Hornibrooks deep pass was picked off by Lewis. Lewis leaped to snatch the ball out of the air reminded some of a one-handed interception Charles Woodson made in 1997 at Michigan State. Its a great feeling to be compared to someone so great, Lewis said. Its humbling.Hornibrook , in his second start, threw three interceptions. The freshman quarterback did throw a game-tying, 17-yard TD pass to Dare Ogunbowale midway through the third quarter. Hornibrook finished 9 of 25 for 88 yards and the Badgers were held to just 71 yards rushing. We couldnt really get any drives going, he said.Wisconsin was 1 of 6 on third down in the fourth quarter and earned a first down on just 3 of 15 third downs. We didnt convert, Badgers coach Paul Chryst said. We didnt get anything consistently going in the run game.Michigan had chances to have a bigger cushion, but Kenny Allen missed two field goals and his replacement, Ryan Tice missed a field goal.ddddddddddddTo win championships, youve got to make field goals, said Harbaugh, adding the two will compete during practice for the job.THE TAKEAWAYWisconsin: The Badgers have impressive wins against then-No. 8 Michigan State and then-No. 5 LSU, but could not overcome the turnovers made by Hornibrook.Michigan: The Wolverines suddenly have some serious woes on special teams. Allen is just 4 of 8 on field goals this season, and got benched. Highly touted freshman Quinn Nordin, who had Harbaugh sleep over at his house during a recruiting visit, is not an option because hes injured. The Wolverines were also plagued by penalties on punts.POLL IMPLICATIONSThe Wolverines will likely stay right where they are in The Associated Press poll . The Badgers will probably move down a few spots because the next highest-ranked team to lose was No. 12 Florida State.ALL ABOARDIn a unique formation, Harbaugh called for nine players to be directly behind center Mason Cole, and had Speight speaking to the Wolverines in the long line. Then, the Wolverines got into a traditional, tight formation to pave the way for DeVeon Smith to run up the middle for 5 yards against the Badgers to set up Hills TD run. Harbaugh said his son, Jay, an assistant coach, installed the unique formation during a recent practice. Maybe it has a future, Harbaugh said with a grin.UP NEXTWisconsin: The Badgers run of games against top-10 teams extends to three with a home game against No. 2 Ohio State. The seasons only going to keep getting harder, said Corey Clement, who ran for 68 yards on 17 carries.Michigan: Finally, the Wolverines hit the road. They play at Rutgers, which is coming off a 58-0 loss at Ohio State to fall to 2/3 overall and 0-2 in the Big Ten. ' ' '
