RIO DE JANEIRO -- Martin Kaymer is tired of talking about the golfers who arent at the Olympics.Even before the first shot is hit Thursday -- the official return of Olympic golf for the first time in 112 years -- Kaymer has spent enough time at other sports and with other athletes to remember whats important. And, for him, its not money. The most inspiring moment was meeting Andreas Toba in the elevator at the Olympic Village after the German gymnasts brave performance. Toba badly injured his knee during the floor exercise in team competition. Fighting through pain, he managed to go through the pommel horse routine and helped Germany advance to the finals.Compared to them, we are so weak in terms of our attitude sometimes, Kaymer said Wednesday. They do that sport with so much passion. They put all their heart in there. Some players, even from other sports, they dont come here. And you think, `How can you not want to come here? To meet those people ... that is why we all started our sport. When we were 12 or 15 years old, we went on the range. We didnt do it for money. We went because it was our love, what we wanted to do.When you play a sport where you make a lot of money, theres a good chance you lose a little bit of that passion.Kaymer did not single out any of the 21 golfers who withdrew from the Rio Games, nor did he suggest that every golfer is driven by money. He just doesnt understand why anyone would miss a moment like this. And it made him realize there is more to sport than winning majors and cashing in by accepting appearance fees around the world. Above all, it made him realize that I didnt do anything wrong by coming here.He cited the overloaded schedule -- three majors and a World Golf Championship in a seven-week span before he left for Rio -- and the PGA Tour players who begin the FedEx Cup playoffs with the $35 million in bonus money right after the Olympics are over.At the end of the day, I think most athletes really do it for the money, Kaymer said. Im not saying everybody does it, but a lot of the guys, they do things for money these days.Another meaningful moment for Kaymer was sitting down with Germanys field hockey team the other day. They dont make anything, he said. The pride they have in where they are from and what they do and what they can do here in these two weeks, its all they have for four years. And we dont show any appreciation for those guys.Instead, so much of the conversation has been the top players sitting out golfs return to the Olympics. Most of the absentees cited the Zika virus. Others mentioned schedules and their priorities, and there was underlying concern of security and safety.Golf provides a comfortable lifestyle. Five players on the PGA Tour already have crossed the $5 million mark for the season going into the lucrative FedEx Cup playoffs. Kaymer knows he has it good. He happens to play a sport that gets more recognition than the athletes that have inspired him this week. But the actual work? The results? If you sit in a canoe or do rowing or jumping or whatever, they are the best in the world, he said. They dont have the status that we have, but that doesnt mean they are worse. The Olympic theme, that everyone is the same, I enjoy that.I enjoy so much to be with people who know why theyre here and why they do what they do, and they give it their all.Kaymer can only hope his peculiar habit of producing great moments in even-numbered years continues. He won the PGA Championship in 2010 for his first major. His par putt under enormous pressure gave Europe the decisive point in its Ryder Cup victory in 2012. He won the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 in 2014.He would love to leave Rio with a gold medal around his neck. And he doesnt care whos at Olympic Golf Course. Its not easy to win, he said. The great thing about golf right now if from 60 players, probably 40 or 45 can win. Its a little disrespectful that they talk more about the people who stay home. And if he doesnt win a medal? That doesnt change a thing. No matter what happens this week, he said, its the greatest week of my life. Craig Biggio Astros Jersey . That gave fans outside Joe Louis Arena another chance to ask for autographs from the 19-year-old whose stardom in the NHL has arrived earlier than most expected. Jeff Bagwell Jersey . PAUL, Minn. http://www.baseballastrosproshop.com/roberto-osuna-astros-jersey/ . Aduriz headed home Markel Susaetas cross in the sixth minute to open the scoring at San Mames Stadium. He bettered that with a long-range blast that went in off the goal frame in the 18th, and converted a penalty in the 72nd after Diego Mainz was sent off for fouling Aduriz with only the goalkeeper to beat. Michael Brantley Jersey . -- Patrick Reed got an early start in golf. Jake Marisnick Jersey . JOHNS, N. DETROIT -- Mikael Backlund and the Calgary Flames got their six-game road trip started in the best way possible.Backlund scored the tiebreaking goal with 7:46 left in the third period to give Calgary a 3-2 victory over the slumping Detroit Red Wings on Sunday night. This is huge, because were looking at these six games almost like a playoff series, said Flames defenseman Dougie Hamilton, who had three assists. We know we have to pick up some wins on this trip, and this is a good start.Garnet Hathaway got his first career goal and Matt Stajan also scored for Calgary. Chad Johnson stopped 21 shots.I thought this was a very even game, but we did a nice job of capitalizing on our chances, Flames coach Glen Gulutzan said. We didnt lose any momentum coming out of the Chicago game, where we played very well in a loss.Tomas Tatar and Anthony Mantha scored for Detroit, which lost its fourth straight game. Jimmy Howard made 23 saves.I think we gave them their chances. I think from the start, a few turnovers in our own end, all of a sudden they end up spending a minute, minute and a half in our end instead of making a simple play and move the play out to the neutral zone, Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg said.Backlund broke a 2-all tie when he slammed Michael Froliks pass from the left circle past Howard and into the open side of the net for his second goal.We better pick ourselves up and we better come to work tomorrow to get better, Detroit coach Jeff Blashill said. And we better put the work in that it takes to earn confidence come Wednesday (at Buffalo). Thats the bottom line. We better pick ourselves up in a hurry and focus on coming to win a hockey game on Wednesday.Mantha tied it 2-all 7:59 into the third with his first of the season. He put a snap shot under the crossbar on the short side after bringing the puck out from behind the net.Stajan gave the Flames a 2-1 lead at 2:31 of the third with his first goal of the season. He tipped in Hamilltons slap shot from the right point.ddddddddddddathaway tied it 1-all at 3:40 of the second. Hathaway, who was beside the net and battling with a Red Wings player, got the shaft of his stick on a high shot by Hamilton from the top of the right circle and deflected it into the empty side of the net.Thats an amazing feeling. I saw Fer (Micheal Ferland) get the puck to Dougie, so I went to the net, Hathaway said. It was an odd play, because Howard was still flailing around, so I wasnt sure if he had the puck or if it had gone in. Ill probably tell people that I sniped it -- that sounds a lot better. Weve still got five more road games, so it is big to get this one and get some momentum.Tatar gave Detroit a 1-0 lead 8:06 into the game. He blindly slid a puck toward the net from the high slot that beat Johnson. It was Tatars third goal and only his second in 14 games.Howard was forced to make a couple of saves in close after Red Wings giveaways deep in their zone.Detroit defenseman Alexey Marchenko left with an upper-body injury after taking a hit from Ferland with a little less than 5:30 left in the second period. Blashill said Marchenko will likely be out a little while and the team would have more information Monday.Game notes Detroit LW Thomas Vanek returned after missing 11 games with a hip injury. The Red Wings were 3-7-1 without Vanek and averaged under two goals per game. He had four goals and eight points in seven games. ... Calgary forward Johnny Gaudreau missed his second game after sustaining a broken finger on a slash by Minnesota C Eric Staal. Gaudreau will miss six to eight weeks. ... Red Wings C Darren Helm missed his second game after dislocating his shoulder. He also will be out six to eight weeks.UP NEXTFlames: Visit the Buffalo Sabres on Monday night.Red Wings: Visit the Sabres on Wednesday night. ' ' '
