BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Wake Forests defense kept taking the ball away Saturday.John Wolford, who reclaimed the starting quarterback job this week, kept taking advantage of his good fortune. On a day the Demon Deacons picked off five passes and blocked a field goal, Wolford ran for two scores, threw for another and led Wake to a momentous 33-28 victory at Indiana. Wake is off to its first 4-0 start (1-0 ACC) in 10 years and celebrated coach Dave Clawsons 100th career win.I came here wanting to start this rebuilding process and you get to see the players around you get so much better, you get to improve with them, people care more, all that stuff you get to see, Wolford said. And its translating to wins.It wasnt just the result that was impressive. The Deacons stout defense held the Hoosiers (2-1) well below their 32.0 scoring average, ended Devine Reddings streak of five straight games with 100 yards rushing and forced Lagow into five interceptions and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. But the Hoosiers sure didnt make it easy on Wake.Lagow threw a 75-yard TD pass to Nick Westbrook on the first play and had the Hoosiers in scoring position on the next series -- until a ball bounced off the hands of Luke Timian in the end zone and into the hands of Jessie Bates. Twelve plays later, Wolford tied the score on a 4-yard TD run.Bates broke the tie with a 55-yard interception return in the second quarter and then after the blocked field goal, Wolford threw a 26-yard TD pass to Chuck Wade to make it 21-7.Wolford was 16 of 29 for 172 yards and ran 14 times for 61 yards. Matt Colburn ran 29 times for 103 yards.Lagow finished 28 of 47 with three TD passes and broke the schools single-game record with 496 yards -- including a 49-yard TD pass with 11 seconds left in the game. Ricky Jones had eight catches for 208 yards. We just had way too many errors, nine penalties, a lot of them were critical, Indiana coach Kevin Wilson said. Weve got to finish drives and weve got to play a little cleaner.THE TAKEAWAYWake Forest: The Demon Deacons are oozing with confidence as they return to ACC play. They are two wins away from becoming bowl-eligible and will now embark on meaningful games in October and November, a longtime goal for Clawson and his players.Indiana: The Hoosiers first loss came in unexpected fashion. Redding ran 16 times for 68 yards. And after throwing no interceptions in his first two FBS starts, Lagow turned it over five times. Yes, the Hoosiers played without their starting right tackle and starting right guard, but they must play much better going forward.HAPPY HOMECOMINGBates, a freshman from Fort Wayne, Indiana, snagged his first two college interceptions Saturday in his homecoming. Clawson wasnt surprised, calling him a very good player and noting he was a three-sport athlete in high school.MOMENT OF SILENCEIndiana had a moment of silence before the game for Allison Hoeppner, the daughter of Terry and Jane Hoeppner, who the school said was killed in a car crash early Saturday. Terry Hoeppner coached the Hoosiers for two seasons and died in June 2007 after battling brain cancer. We are shocked and saddened by this terrible tragedy, Wilson said in a statement. The Hoeppners mean a great deal, not only to me and my family, but to the entire IU Football family.UP NEXTWake Forest: The Demon Deacons head to North Carolina State, which has won the last two meeting by a combined 77-30. Wake Forest should fare better this time.Indiana: The Hoosiers open Big Ten play against angry Michigan State , which was upset at home by Wisconsin. Indiana has lost seven straight in the series and the trophy, the Old Brass Spittoon, has earned an almost permanent spot in East Lansing. Kurt Warner Youth Jersey . Its the second straight game Bell has scored in extra time for Kelowna, which beat the Brandon Wheat Kings 6-5 on Friday, and he now has four game-winning goals on the season. David Long Rams Jersey . And when it opened, every player was at his stall. Thats a sure sign that a team is in a slump and is searching for answers. "Its embarrassing to be at home and play the way we did," said defenceman Josh Gorges. http://www.ramsrookiestore.com/Rams-Torry-Holt-Jersey/ . In Europe, top teams seem to be largely happy with their squads after spending nearly $1 billion in the off-season. And although English league clubs are unlikely to splash cash in January, Arsenal and Chelsea could be tempted to strengthen their squads with new strikers. Taylor Rapp Youth Jersey . -- Charlie Graham stopped 67 shots as the Belleville Bulls edged the visiting Guelph Storm 6-5 on Saturday in Ontario Hockey League action. Jared Goff Rams Jersey . -- New England Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis is retiring after a 16-year career to become the goalie coach for the Los Angeles Galaxy. OKLAHOMA CITY -- There has been a national debate taking place this past week over star players sitting out games due to rest. From Cleveland to Atlanta, head coaches have decided to sit their best players in order to save them for the entire season.Indiana coach Nate McMillan wishes he had that problem. He has been forced to scratch forward Paul George from Fridays lineup due to a sore left ankle. The Pacers wound up falling 116-96 to the Phoenix Suns.He really hasnt done anything in the last two days, McMillan told the Indy Star. The ankle was sore when he was playing and the last two days it really hasnt gotten any better. We just want to make sure everything is OK there, for his sake and ours. Hopefully there isnt anything and he just needs some time. The Pacers didnt announce whether George will be suited up for Sunday nights game in Oklahoma City. He was scheduled to have an MRI Saturday. But there is no doubt, they play much differently when their All-Star forward is on the floor or not.George leads Indiana in scoring (21.0), rebounds (7.1) and steals (1.7). If he cant go, thats a lot of slack the rest of the Pacers have to pick up.Indiana is hoping the return of Rodney Stuckey will make up for some of the loss of George. Stuckey played Friday after straining his right hamstring Oct. 28.He said he felt pretty good and was ready to go, McMillan told the Star. You want to slowly work him back into conditioning and rhythm and not give him a ton of minutes right off the bat.The Thunder also sustained an injury during its win over Brooklyn Friday. Backup point guard Semajj Christon suffered a concussion and is currently in the NBAs concussion protocol.dddddddddddd He also has a non-displaced left facial fracture.According to Thunder officials, once Christon passes the protocol, he will be able to return to the lineup wearing a facemask. That leaves the Thunder with only Russell Westbrook as the only point guard on the roster. Cameron Payne is still healing from foot surgery in the preseason.According to Thunder coach Billy Donovan, Victor Oladipo will see time running the point with the second unit.Victor I feel very comfortable with just because hes played some point in Orlando and hes done it a little bit here, Donovan said. Im fine with that. I think we can create and generate enough ball handling when Russell is off the floor to at least get into our offense. That will be the biggest thing. Its the Thunders reserves that have been a big reason the team has won two straight after a four-game losing streak. On Friday, they accounted for 39 points and 15 rebounds.I thought they did a really good job, Donovan said. I mentioned after a couple games ago that I felt like we as a staff, myself in particular, try to help those guys. I thought they were on the same page. I thought they moved the basketball. I thought they made the game easier for each other. They generated good shots. They helped each other. They defended. It was good to see them play the way they did and it was good to see them extend onto the lead. ' ' '
