SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Michael Phelps wants to dive into Silicon Valleys investment opportunities as he tries to make the transition from Olympic swimming star and product pitchman to entrepreneur.I would love to get involved, whether its in a couple little startups here and there, take a little risk, have some fun and see where it goes, Phelps said in an interview during a recent visit to San Jose, California, while appearing at Intuits QuickBooks software conference. For now, Phelps isnt providing any details about what he is going to do, though he says he has been getting advice from venture capitalists and other experienced investors in Silicon Valley startups.Getting into tech investing would be a new direction for Phelps, whose business experience to date consists mostly of his own line of swimwear and endorsement deals with the likes of Under Armour, Visa and Wheaties. These and other big brands have paid him an estimated $75 million during his career. Thats far more than the $1.65 million that he received from the U.S. Olympic Committee and Speedo for winning a record 28 medals, including 23 golds, in five Olympics. Hes still promoting products; he is currently doing commercials for computer chipmaker Intel in a campaign that began in October.Whatever he does next, Phelps isnt ready to start his own investment fund, like retired Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant did earlier this year with entrepreneur Jeff Stibel. And if Phelps has ideas for founding a startup of his own, hes keeping them to himself.Making the leap from pitchman to businessman wont be easy, said David Carter, executive director of the University of Southern Californias Marshall Sports Business Institute. Athletes come and go and many talk a big game, but they dont follow through, he said. Phelps is really going to have commit to learning about business and demonstrate his seriousness about it.Other celebrities have ventured into the tech industry in search of riches, with decidedly mixed results.Notable successes include rapper and record producer Dr. Dre, who was part of the founding team that sold Beats to Apple for $3 billion 2014. Actor Ashton Kutcher co-founded an investment fund in 2010 that made early investments in startups such as the ride-hailing service Uber, the home rental-service Airbnb and the music streaming service Spotify. The funds value had soared to $250 million from $30 million, based on a review of its books earlier this year by Forbes magazine.Among the flops: HJR Capital, a tech-investment firm that collapsed in 2009, a decade after former San Francisco 49er lineman Harris Barton founded it and later enticed ex-teammates Joe Montana and Ronnie Lott to join him. In Rhode Island, former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling started a video game company that went bankrupt in 2012.Phelps is exploring ways to expand his business ventures beyond a line of swimwear and other clothing bearing his MP logo. Other products are in the pipeline for next year, though he wont say what.I am getting my feet wet, Phelps said with a grin. 2017 will be a big year.Custom Washington Wizards Jerseys . Ciganda made a 6-foot birdie putt after Lees birdie chip from the rough off the back edge missed a half-inch to the right.I was just trying to stay in the present and hit as best I could, Ciganda said. In the end, it was so close. I think I was the lucky one today and Im very happy.Ciganda lost a five-stroke advantage on the final five holes -- getting into the playoff when Lee bogeyed the par-5 18th after hitting her third shot into the water. The last three, four holes I was pretty nervous, said Ciganda, who played in the group ahead of Lee. I was looking more and I was 1 up, and then I was on 18 I saw I was 1-down and I couldnt believe it. So its just golf. Only one can win.Lee is winless in two seasons on the tour.I feel like I had a battle with myself out there, the 21-year-old UCLA student told Golfweek. I came back at the end, but it just wasnt enough.Cigandas breakthrough victory made her the third European winner this year, joining Swedens Anna Nordqvist and Germanys Caroline Masson. Its very special because its been a tough few years for me, Ciganda said. My coach (Rogelio Echeverria) passed away two years ago and I had to look for a new coach. I changed caddies, too.Its been a long journey, but at the same time its really nice to get the win. I love competing and playing and being an athlete. I couldnt ask for a better life.Shes now working with Terry McNamara, Annika Sorenstams former caddie, and instructor Jorge Parada.Ciganda played the final five holes in 4 over -- making a double bogey on 14 and bogeys on 16 and 18 -- for a 2-over 70 at Sky 72 in the event that had an emotional start with Se Ri Pak ending her Hall of Fame career Thursday in front of her home fans.Three strokes ahead of U.S. Womens Open champion Brittany Lang entering the day and five ahead of Ciganda, Lee had a 75 to match Ciganda at 10-under 278 on the Ocean Course.Ciganda birdied five of the first eight holes, taking a one-stroke lead with a 6-foot bbirdie putt on the par-3 eighth.dddddddddddd The two-time European Solheim Cup player added a 20-footer on the par-4 10th for a four-stroke margin and was five ahead soon after.I didnt look at the leaderboard until I think it was on No. 12, Ciganda said. I saw I was winning by five. I wasnt expecting that. She compounded trouble in and then just above a greenside bunker into a double bogey on the par-4 14th, dropped another stroke on the par-4 16th and three-putted 18.I was positive, Ciganda said. I just tried my best and I tried to play each shot the best I could. So its not that I was giving up or anything.Needing a par on 18 for her first victory, Lee hit an 8-iron from 130 yards that smacked into the front bank and bounced into the water. She was able to drop a few feet off the right edge of the green, chipped past and made a 5-footer to force the playoff.Lee had four bogeys in a five-hole stretch in the middle of the round to seemingly fall out of contention. But while Ciganda faltered in the group ahead, the American made a 5-foot birdie putt on the par-4 15th and a 12-footer on the par-3 17th.It was tough. It was windy at the end and a little bit of rain, so it wasnt easy, Ciganda said. But Im from the north in Spain, which is cold and rainy in the winter, so Ive been practicing a lot in those conditions.Chinas Shanshan Feng (70) and South Koreas Min-Sun Kim (71) tied for third at 8 under.
