DAVIE, Fla. -- New dad Ryan Tannehill is ready to take charge and scold when necessary, even in public, because he knows whatever happens reflects on him.As a quarterback, that is.Tannehills 2-week-old son might not need reprimanding yet, but the perennially problematic Miami Dolphins offense does. And at the urging of new coach Adam Gase, Tannehill said hes assuming more of a leadership role.Adam has completely enabled me, Tannehill said. I think I have the credibility now to pretty much demand excellence out of these guys. Thats what Im trying to do.Tannehill made his comments following Tuesdays practice, when the offense tried to redeem itself for a woeful performance in a scrimmage three days earlier. Gase said his quarterback did a good job of reorienting teammates in a positive direction. He came out with a purpose, and was very aggressive as far as chirping a little bit out there, Gase said. I saw some growth there as far as his personality coming out and taking control of the offense.Tannehills not a holler guy by nature, and in the past critics found the easygoing Texan too passive when the Dolphins sputtered, which was often. But with four NFL seasons and 64 starts on his resume, Tannehill acknowledged its time for him to become more assertive. Its part of my role to push the guys around me to be the best they can be, he said. I think thats part of being a leader.Gase has done some nudging. The first-time head coach won praise for his work as an assistant with Peyton Manning, Jay Cutler and Tim Tebow, and was hired because the Dolphins believe hell make Tannehill better.Gase is giving Tannehill more responsibility than hes had in the past, including flexibility with audibles at the line. The coaching staff raves about the way Tannehill has absorbed the new playbook.Weve been unbelievably impressed how much hes picked up, offensive coordinator Clyde Christensen said. It would have drowned an average man.Tannehill and company flunked their first big test, however. In a scrimmage Saturday, the offense managed one first down in eight series and didnt cross midfield. It was a collective failure, and Tannehill let his teammates hear about it.Im not going to get into what I said, but everyone already knew that it wasnt acceptable, he said. We didnt play well anywhere on the offensive side of the ball from top to bottom.Perhaps the return of receiver DeVante Parker will help. The 2015 first-round pick was back at practice Tuesday after being sidelined by a right hamstring injury, rejoining receivers Jarvis Landry and Kenny Stills on the first unit.In the huddle I said, `Man, its nice to have you back, Tannehill said. Hes a good player. He stretches the field for us. You put him on one side, Kenny on the other side, and Jarvis in the middle, and we have three really dynamic playmakers. There are numerous question marks, however, with inexperienced Jay Ajayi the first-team running back, and with top draft pick Laremy Tunsil relegated to the second team at guard even though the starting offensive line has looked only so-so.Perhaps by the time Tannehills son Steel attends his first practice -- Hopefully in the next couple of weeks, Dad said -- some issues will be resolved. The next test will be the opening exhibition game Friday at the New York Giants, with the starters seeing limited action.Im looking forward to taking advantage of every rep we get, Tannehill said, and really just playing fast.If the Dolphins dont, theyll hear about it from their quarterback.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP-NFL---Follow Steven Wine on Twitter: http://twitter.com/Steve-Wine. Speaking Thursday on TSN 1050 Thursday, the Leafs GM also touched on the questions surrounding the teams leadership and the struggles of his big-name free-agent signing. “Its not from lack of effort from the coaching staff. Michigan State has had enough success under Mark Dantonio that the Spartans have probably earned the benefit of the doubt -- one terrible season doesnt necessarily mean the program is in decline. But the pressure is on to show 2016 was an aberration.Michigan State staggered to a 3-9 finish this season, winning only one game in conference play. A year ago, the Spartans made it to the national semifinals after winning their second Big Ten title in three seasons, but they followed that up with one of the biggest collapses of any team in the country. Michigan State is missing out on a bowl for the first time in Dantonios 10 seasons at the helm. What I think that we need to do is take this opportunity. What Ive always tried to do was that whatever situation was thrown at us, Ive tried to see the positive in that situation and try to deal with that situation, Dantonio said after his teams 45-12 loss at Penn State to end the season. In this case, the positive is that we start early. We start discovering who we are, what we need to fix, who were recruiting, whos coming in, and what we have to do. That all starts at an earlier time now.Almost nothing went right for the Spartans this season. With Connor Cook in the NFL, Michigan State turned to fifth-year senior Tyler OConnor at quarterback, but the passing game never approached the level needed for the Spartans to beat quality opponents. Damion Terry and Brian Lewerke also played. Lewerke, a redshirt freshman, had what seemed like an opportunity to establish himself as the quarterback of the future, but he broke his leg in late October.Defensively, Michigan State no longer resembled the aggressive, disruptive unit that could shut down other Big Ten teams when Pat Narduzzi was the coordinator. The Spartans managed only 11 sacks all season and werent great against the run, despite the presence of star defensive lineman Malik McDowell.Throughout thhe season, weve had our struggles, but a lot of times, theyre saying, `Michigan States so young.dddddddddddd Theyre so young. Theyre so young, junior linebacker Chris Frey said Saturday. Starting tomorrow, nobodys young anymore. Guys have had a full season and a spring under their belt. Theyre going into their second spring. Guys got to make that extra leap forward in their game. They got to learn to study film harder. They got to hit the weight room harder. There were a couple bright spots for Michigan State. LJ Scott rushed for 994 yards as a sophomore, including 160 in a near-upset of Ohio State late in the season. Freshman receiver Donnie Corley made contributions both on offense and in the secondary and showed plenty of promise for the future. After by far the worst season in Dantonios tenure, there are naturally some questions about what the coaching staff can do differently, but he gave no indication that anyone will be fired.Well look at what we do as a staff, but Im not even considering letting any of our staff go, he said. For the Spartans, 2015 was a glorious year, not just because they made it to college footballs four-team playoff, but because of the teams they had to outlast to get there -- Jim Harbaugh and Michigan and Urban Meyer and Ohio State. This season, those two rivals left Michigan State behind, and its up to the Spartans to bounce back quickly in whats clearly become a brutally difficult division. This season was quite a wake-up call.I think guys are going to realize, This is not who we are, and we dont want this anymore, Frey said. Were playing a lot of great teams, and we just got to be better.---More AP college football: www.collegefootball.ap.org and https://twitter.com/AP-Top25 .---Follow Noah Trister at www.Twitter.com/noahtrister ' ' '
